Spotters:
We recommend having a spotter, if you're serious about keeping the best stats for both teams in the game. The action in basketball games is fast-paced enough that having an extra pair of eyes can make all the difference in how accurately and completely you can record the stats as they happen.
doHOOPS allows you to record very detailed stats and builds in accuracy checks and balances, so if you want to take full advantage of your doHOOPS stats recording capabilities, a spotter can be very helpful.
No matter what method you use to capture your stats (whether it's doHOOPS, another software program, or pencil and paper), a spotter makes your life easier and your stats more accurate. But you can certainly use doHOOPS without a spotter.
If you find yourself without a spotter and aren't particularly interested in keeping full stats for your opponent's players, take advantage of the doHOOPS generic player feature and just use a single generic player for your opponent. You can record as much or as little for that generic player as you want -- maybe only record successful field goals and free throws, for example, so that the score for your opponent stays accurate and current. (And meanwhile, you can focus your attention on recording detailed stats only for your own team's players.)
